Hundreds of different species of fish lived in these lakes and the animals thrived. Bhopal was a major tourist attraction because of its art and history. A total of 850,000 people lived in Bhopal before the leak.

On December 2nd, 1984, it was almost midnight when a loud noise was heard reported near the Union Carbide Plant. Minutes later a foggy substance filled houses and businesses all over Bhopal. This smoke was coming from the very top of the Union Carbide Plant, a plant containing over 100 tons of poisonous or deadly chemicals. This, what was thought to be “smoke” alarmed the Bhopal fire department and the whole city.
