On December 2nd, 1984, it was almost midnight when a loud noise was heard reported near the Union Carbide Plant. Minutes later a foggy substance filled houses and businesses all over Bhopal. This smoke was coming from the very top of the Union Carbide Plant, a plant containing over 100 tons of poisonous or deadly chemicals. This, what was thought to be “smoke” alarmed the Bhopal fire department and the whole city.

The next morning an estimated 2,259 people were reported dead. The chemical that leaked was called methyl isocyanate, a very deadly chemical. They later found out that 600,000 people were exposed to this chemical and were suffering from respiratory issues and irritation. All of this chemical had come from the top of the “Union Carbide Plant” and leaked out all night. Over 40 tons of this chemical had been released from a hole in the tank.
