Bhopal Boycotting

It has been 36 years since that terrible night in Bhopal. Right after the leak thousands of people from Bhopal had protested and demanded they get justice for what had happened. They wanted to sue Union Carbide which was pronounced "One of the first billion-dollar lawsuits ever". All of their families were ruined and most of them were broke. Finally in 1989, after lots of protesting the Indian Supreme court has told Union Carbide to pay 470 million. Still to this day families and friends of people affected by Bhopal are demanding more money from Union Carbide and justice.

Besides money, people in Bhopal wanted to change the current factory safety laws to ensure this doesn't repeat itself. This brought awareness to different counties. The reason that these leaders new was from thousands of interviews done throughout the years. Factory safety laws needed to be strict.

Union Carbide ended up getting sold to a Michigan based company in 2001 called "Dow". Now that Dow owns Union Carbide thousands of people want them to clean the old Union Carbide site. The site still gives of dangerous chemicals and is not safe for the public. A city next to Bhopal, Annu Nager, says that their water is still infected and is dangerous. They don't have any other ways to get clean water. To this day Dow refuses to clean up Union Carbide. 

Lots of laws have been changed in India since 1984. One of these laws states that chemical plants cannot be built in Urban Areas. Factories in almost every country have been demanded to update their safety to the new percussion or they would be shut down. The "Emergency Planning and Community Rights to Know" law has been added in case this might happen again.
